Some musicians had only vague blueprints—chords, melodies, timing, and lyrics—leaving much of the interpretation up to them. My main direction was often simply, “Do it how you would do it.” They have shaped my taste so much that if they pushed back, I almost always preferred their instincts over mine. Every improvisation came from minds more creative than mine, seasoning this “plain potato” I was “baking.” I’m incredibly lucky to have been lent the time, talents, and advice of stage and studio performers, teachers, engineers, and others passionate about their craft. I learned how hard it is to get people into a room to learn unfamiliar music and feel vulnerable in front of others. That makes those who did it all the more special. To my wife and kids: I’m sorry if I burned you out on these songs after years of writing, recording, and editing. Despite that, you always encouraged me. I love you. - John
